I am sure Saint will answer you.
But just would like to share the way i do it…might be useful to you or might not.
1. I check few stocks such as jpa, punjl, ril, relcap, sbin, dlf, hdil, tatasteel, bnf, nf.
2. I go through daily charts of these scripts.
I look for candlestick patterns, such as doji, bullish/bearish engulfing patterns.
I look for the stock for which the ATR(3) is decreased. The idea is that there is chance of bigger move next day. It may not give big move forming another narrow range day.
If you see doji or inside bar on daily chart then ATR(3) will show decrease in value.
3. Once I shortlist some stocks from daily timeframe, I go through 60 min timeframe to find out the congestion pattern, the stock could be about to breakout or breakdown. 60 Min chart will be made up of 7 bars for a day. On daily chart if its doji then it will show congestion of 7 bars on 60 min.
When you find the stock about to say breakout then it may or it may face resistance. and next day you can play in both direction depending on the pivot you get.
4. This way you get normally list of 4-5 stocks.
5. Monitor them next day. If stock starts with irratic movement on 5 min tf, I discard that.
6. Then I normally use pivots to enter and exit. Also high volume bars for exit.
7. also you have to take care that you do not whipsaw. I find day high/low comes handy in this.
Now little fun part:
If one feels above method is KG method, then one can take a look at,
1. RSI or MACD: Because of congestion, mostly RSI or MACD would show divergence. if one still feels RSI and MACD are std 1st, then one can still further apply mathematics on them.
Also you may get the confluence of few EMAs coming together because of congestion.
2. One can also apply VSA to find out is whether that congestion is accumulation or distribution. The small bar on daily is because of supply coming or demand not there.
3. During the congestion mostly, one can get volume profile. so once the balance is there, price has to move out of balance.
4. Some NR1, NR2 or NR 4 if congestion is more on daily.
5. Now during the trading day one can try to find simple patterns like triangles, wedges. If one feels this is boring, then one can draw as many lines as possible to check existence of any animal like, butterfly, crab etc.
Finally all finally meet in Rome :-) :-) :-)

Very nice.
Could you elaborate more on targets for exits? Do you use the same targets the way they are mentioned in traditional pattern explanations in the books. I normally find safe to exit at 80% of that target.
Also one more thing, how is your position management? Do you enter all position at once?

I always exit with targets, sometimes it is fine as the market reverses from target zone, sometimes not, as market makes a big move through the target zone. Hello SO,
I am sure Saint will answer you.
But just would like to share the way i do it…might be useful to you or might not.1. I check few stocks such as jpa, punjl, ril, relcap, sbin, dlf, hdil, tatasteel, bnf, nf.
2. I go through daily charts of these scripts.
I look for candlestick patterns, such as doji, bullish/bearish engulfing patterns.
I look for the stock for which the ATR(3) is decreased. The idea is that there is chance of bigger move next day. It may not give big move forming another narrow range day.
If you see doji or inside bar on daily chart then ATR(3) will show decrease in value.3. Once I shortlist some stocks from daily timeframe, I go through 60 min timeframe to find out the congestion pattern, the stock could be about to breakout or breakdown. 60 Min chart will be made up of 7 bars for a day. On daily chart if its doji then it will show congestion of 7 bars on 60 min.
When you find the stock about to say breakout then it may or it may face resistance. and next day you can play in both direction depending on the pivot you get.4. This way you get normally list of 4-5 stocks.
5. Monitor them next day. If stock starts with irratic movement on 5 min tf, I discard that.
6. Then I normally use pivots to enter and exit. Also high volume bars for exit.
7. also you have to take care that you do not whipsaw. I find day high/low comes handy in this.Finally all finally meet in Rome :-) :-) :-)

I refer to Nifty futures (as I have watched and traded this) — there are days when NF trends one way right from the start till 3:28PM. This happens very often in a month. With some experience one can recognise such days and ride it till the end. In such days avoid taking reverse positions and if due to congestion one comes out - then re-entry in the original direction on break of the congestion can be taken again & held till the end of the day.
Such days are gold mines and all previous losses get wiped out in such days.

just small query regarding Kotak short trade. It was forming a triangle pattern before the BO bar so I put my order above HOD+Filter. My long triggered above HOD but later my sl hit. How do we trade in such type of situations?
Do we need wait for BO and pullback if it's normal break out (without a WRB) or wait for next 5 min bar if it's BO with a WRB? Silly question but need your help.

Longs if trigger today will be difficult to take, immediate resistance. These are the trades which are difficult, on one hand we think why are we buying strong resistance and on the other we have a method that we have to follow and if we blast up we will curse ourselves of not following the plan. Maybe a smaller position should help.

MJ,track the long timeframes as well for a clearer perspective,use the direction of the miniflow of the stock you are trading as a guideline.For example,we took the longs in BANK NF and was stopped.Now we are holding short posns,if this moves decisvely to the down and breaks a pivot high,we would be exitting our short posns.But miniflow still being short,we would sit on sidelines till we get the next opportunity to go short again.
Unless we get a reversal that is……of course,sometimes,we can get whipped about.So far,today is turning out like that :)
The strategy of this thread is to look into the longer tfs and trade the juicy ones when the mkt opens.For example,AXIS BANK is looking more and more like a LONG that is waiting to erupt.KOTAK BANK looking like a short about to dump.So,when we want to get into longs,we get into axis…..when the trend moves down,we get into kotak.We want just that trend,that move,and then we are off to some other stock to plunder.A clear cut directional move will get axis and kotak on the same page,presuming longs,…..but there always is a DLF or RELCAP that is on our shorts watchlist.So on so forth,the game goes on.
The longs that trigger and that are contratrend to the larger tf,yes,you could take smaller sizes……but use the miniflow as a guideline and stay out of unnecessary trades.
